Summary
The Friedman Building is a 4-storey 6299 square meter university building located at The University of British Columbia. The Friedman (Block B) Building was originally part of a larger complex designed in 1959 by Thompson, Berwick & Pratt Architects & Engineers and included the Copp (Block A) Building and Medical Sciences (Block C) Building. In 1965 an addition was added which connects the J.B. MacDonald building to the original 1959 building. The renovated building will house the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences and the Physical Therapy Division, School of Rehabilitation Sciences.
The project is part of the UBC Renew program. As such, the design will use practical and available means to reduce energy consumption; contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions; reduce water consumption and demonstrate innovation.
The current building does not meet requirements for universal barrier free access. The proposed design reconnects the accessible paths and entrances into the fabric of the university, as well as providing barrier free access within the building.
A key project goal for UBC Renew includes the upgrading of all life safety features in the building to meet current applicable codes as well as removing hazardous material from the building.
The project will provide major upgrades to the seismic, mechanical, electrical and elevator systems of the building as well as an upgrade to the technical performance of the building envelope.
