Summary

Design and construction of a new, +/- 53,000 sq. ft. light industrial building to house a Letter Carrier Depot in NW Calgary as part of Canada Post Corporation’s “transformation program”. This program targets the modernization of postal facilities, equipment and processes with both “new construction” such as this and the “retrofit” of existing facilities. The aim is to improve efficiency, productivity, employee safety and to build a foundation for new and improved service offering capabilities for Canada Post. The new facility also needs to respond to future uses and changes in the postal system as well as the demands of today so we will be including a durability plan to meet these future needs. This building is a sorting and consolidation center for large quantities of mail to be delivered and distributed from the new facility to facilitate increased demands and be one of the largest distribution centre’s in Calgary. It will house approximately 295 employees, with a large number of transient occupants from the Canada post fleet. The facility will be mainly an office/warehouse with ancillary spaces such as locker room, showers and lunch rooms. The large number of employees creates some energy efficiency challenges, we will need to offset this as much as possible with building envelope & mechanical efficiencies to meet the requirements of the client. As a distribution facility, it will have a fleet of 70 vehicles bringing in and taking out mail to their destinations. To meet the large space demands for the fleet on the building site our green space becomes severely limited. To help compensate for this we will be offsetting our hard landscape with a large number of tree plantings in the parking areas.
