Summary

Brentwood College School is an independent school in Mill Bay located 40 km north of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. The school has over 400 students and 40 full time faculty members, half of whom live on campus with their families. The new 24,000 SF Dining / Student Services Centre will house the Laundry, Sewing Room, Campus Store, Student Services and a Student Centre.

Description

To ensure the most efficient solutions and outcome, an Integrated Design Process (IDP) was used. The outcome of this collaboration is expected to save up to 95% of heating costs, using less than one fifth of the energy of a comparable building running on fossil fuels. This will be achieved by using an intricate heat recycling system and an undersea array of heat exchangers, utilizing heat from the ocean. The Dining Hall and Student Services Center is designed to recapture all unused heat exhausted from all equipment and applications, and return a portion of it to the surrounding buildings. Also, a system for great water heat recovery is used, projecting and up to 90% savings in hot water costs.

Sustainability

The project will be demonstrating leadership in addressing the concerns of environmental degradation, global warming, and resource depletion through the design and construction of the new facility, which is targeting LEED Gold certification.

Energy Savings Strategies:

  • Expanded geothermal loop
  • Rejected heat created in the kitchen and laundry will be captured and transferred to heat the dining room, the theatre, and potentially Allard House and the new Visual Arts Centre.

  • Installed dual flush toilets and low-flow fixtures to conserve water and reduce heating cost

Material Strategies

  • Targeting at least 75% construction waste diversion from landfill
  • Materials have been sourced with high recycled content to reduce waste and impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources
  • Preference given to regional materials in order to reduce the environmental impact resulting from transportation
  • Creating a healthy indoor environment by choosing low emitting finish materials such as paints, adhesives and carpet
