Summary

The new building will replace the 35 year old, undersized centre, and be designed to meet the growing needs of the community. Our goal is to achieve a LEED Silver certification (or better)and eventually become a self-sustaining facility. The new nature centre will be constructed on the 250 ha Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve, a very popular distination for birders, naturalists and families alike, located on the west side of the City of Windsor. The new facility will be twice the floor area of the current building and will include 150 m2 of display/ interpretive area, 2 classrooms (126 m2) and a covered terrace. Movable partitions will allow for greater flexibility of occupancy and event planning. The use of recycled building materials, energy efficient lighting & mechanical systems and use of a high performance glazing system are a few examples to be incorporated into the building program. A large portion of the roof (approx. 650 m2) will be planted with sedum and native species. A rain water and grey water management system will be in place. The projected building is located in a Designated Natural Heritage site and construction of the stated building is a permitted complimentary facility as to the Windsor Official Plan and approved by the Windsor City Council.
